Program Overview

The College of Charleston fall semester study abroad program to La Rochelle, France is designed for students who major or minor in French, or who are interested in earning 12-15 credit hours in upper level French, or for students from any academic discipline (who have completed French 202) who are interested in developing fluency in French and maintaining normal progress towards graduation.

Program Requirements

  • Interested students must have completed, or be currently registered in, French 202 prior to participating in the program
  • Students must have at least a 2.5 overall GPA at the College of Charleston
  • Students must either already possess a valid passport or be able to obtain a valid passport
  • Students must apply for a student visa issued by the Consulate of France

Program Highlights

There are many opportunities for students while studying for the fall semester in La Rochelle, France. One of the program highlights is that students will live with local French families during their semester abroad. The families are selected by a company that specializes in placing college students with local French families, and placement is based on answers to a questionnaire that the students complete. Living with families provide students a great opportunity to learn about daily life and culture in France while improving their French language skills.

Courses Offered

Students must enroll in at least 12 credit hours (4 courses) while in La Rochelle to maintain their full-time students status at the College of Charleston. The courses offered are actual College of Charleston classes, therefore students will earn grades just as they would if they were offered on campus. Grades earned will factor into the student’s GPA at the College.
Classes are held at the University of La Rochelle in the CUFLE (Centre Universitaire de Francais Langue Etrangere), or international center, and are taught by French faculty.

Note: Students should meet with their Academic advisor to verify which courses meet the requirements for their major or minor.

Program Costs

Students will pay their normal College of Charleston tuition and a program fee. The program fee of $4,600* (estimated for Fall 2019 and subject to change) includes housing with French families, 2 meals a day (breakfast and dinner) provided by the families, and comprehensive medical insurance.

Additional costs beyond the tuition and program fee are: passport fees, student visa fees, round-trip airfare to France, one meal per day not covered by the family, and any personal travel and other personal expenses/spending money during the semester.

Financial Aid and Scholarships

Any financial aid that a student currently has at the College of Charleston will apply like normal for their semester abroad in La Rochelle (ie. Life Scholarship, Presidential Scholarship, Federal Student Loans and Grants, etc.).  Students should meet with an advisor in the Office of Financial Assistance to determine exactly what aid a student is eligible for.

Application Process

Application deadline is April 15, 2019 for the Fall 2019 program. Please submit your application through ViaTRM. A non-refundable $50 application fee will be posted to the student's myCharleston account once the application has been submitted to, and approved by, the Center for International Education. This fee is included in the $4,600 program fee.
