CofC Aboard the Spirit of South Carolina: Adventure at Sea

Program Overview

The College of Charleston study abroad program Adventure at Sea: Where History Lives aboard the Spirit of South Carolina is a truly interdisciplinary program designed for students across the College  The CofC at Sea Program in the Caribbean offers students the opportunity to study abroad and earn 16 credit hours.  This study abroad program is designed to reach a broad group of students interested in exploring various areas of learning in an international recreation and adventure travel setting while exploring multiple countries and cultures by way of sailing. The program is designed to disengage from technology and distractions of daily life on the mainland for the purposes of experiential learning while learning to sail a historically based style of ocean navigation for tall ships like the Spirit of South Carolina and the historic Age of Sail. The Spirit of South Carolina serves as the residence and mode of  transportation for Spring Semester 2020 as students sail and explore the culturally rich ports of Caribbean countries and ports. 

Students are required to participate in two 4-hour sailing watches with full-time SOSC crew per day of sailing. Sailing journeys will take place in 10-hour to 3-to-4 day increments between port cities along the journey. Students should also be comfortable swimming, lifting 50 lbs, and in overall good shape and health. A physical will be required prior to acceptance into the program. 

Ship will dock in the following 8 countries & territories during the course of the program: US Virgin Islands, British Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Cuba, Bahamas, US Atlantic Coast

Program Dates

Start: January 8, 2020 in St. Thomas USVI

Finish: approximately April 23, 2020 in Charleston, SC

Program Requirements

  • Students must have an overall 2.5 GPA
  • Students must either already possess a valid passport, or be able to obtain a valid passport

Program Costs

Students will pay their normal College of Charleston semester tuition, plus a program fee. The program fee of $14,900 (estimated for Spring 2020) includes passage on the Spirit of South Carolina, lodging, meals, all ground transportation and entrance fees during program excursions (including spring break excursion), academic visas and health insurance.

Additional costs beyond the tuition and program fee are: one-way ticket to meet in USVI, passport fees, and any personal travel and other personal expenses/spending money during the semester.

Financial Aid and Scholarships

Any financial aid that a student currently has at the College of Charleston will apply for their semester abroad aboard the Spirit of South Carolina (ie. Life Scholarship, Presidential Scholarship, Academic Scholarships, Federal Student Loans and Grants, etc.).  Students should meet with an advisor in the Office of Financial Assistance to determine exactly what aid a student is eligible for.  Additionally, the Center for International Education awards scholarships for the semester that range between $500 and $2000.  All students are encouraged to apply.

Please note that a non-refundable $50 application fee, will be charged to the student’s eBill account once the application has been submitted to, and approved by, the CIE. This fee is included in the program fee of $14,900.
