Affiliate Programs

Affiliate programs are approved third party study abroad organizations providing students the opportunity to study a wide variety of subjects around the world.  Students can take classes at a foreign institution or at an academic center administered by the host organization during a semester, year, or summer term.

Application Deadlines: Students must submit a CofC application in ViaTRM by the following deadlines when participating in an affiliate program.
  • Summer 2024: March 15, 2024
  • Fall 2024/ AY 24-25: April 1, 2024

  • Spring 2025: October 15, 2024

Advising - First Steps:

  • Affiliate 101 OAKS
    • Students interested in affiliate programs must self-register and complete the Affiliate 101 OAKS Course. Your CofC and host program application will not be reviewed for approval until this is done.
    • This course covers program selection, the course approval process, application steps, using financial aid, transfer credit, and more. It is your main resource for all information related to studying with an affiliate provider.
    • Self-registration instructions are here.
  • Affiliate Advising Sessions- these sessions are strongly encouraged for all affiliate particiants and will expedite the approval of your application as you will be more familiar with the process and application requirements.
    • Tuesdays 3:30-4:00 (Robert Scott Small, 206)

    • Wednesdays 2:00-2:30 (Robert Scott Small, 206)

    • Thursdays 3:00-3:30 (Robert Scott Small, 206)

  • Further questions/advising
    • Meeting with a CIE Advisor:
      • Once you've reviewed the Affiliate 101 Oaks course, you should make an individual advising appointment with Sarah Simmonite, CIE Associate Director who advises on affiliate programs, through Achieve (formerly known as Appointment Manager) to discuss any questions or concerns specific to your plans.

When participating in an affiliate program, students must have their courses approved prior to departure by the appropriate faculty member (found on the course approval directory) to ensure that the classes taken abroad will be accepted by College of Charleston as transfer credit. You can learn more about the course approval process by watching this video

Students are not charged College of Charleston tuition but instead will pay a program fee directly to the host organization.  With most providers, their program fee includes tuition and academic fees at the host school, housing, excursions, insurance, and onsite support services.  Programs vary, so review the program provider's website to learn what is included. For the College of Charleston, students will only be charged the study abroad fee ($150).

Financial Aid

Students can use portable aid only on approved affiliate programs. Students may participate in other approved independent programs or study through another US university but financial aid will not travel.

Required Approval

All students studying abroad for academic credit must first submit an application to the CIE through ViaTRM and complete the necessary course approval process for non-CofC programs prior to going abroad.  Students who fail to follow these policies and procedures before engaging in study abroad must –upon their return—adhere to the “Transfer of International Credit” process with the Transfer Resource Center in order for their coursework to be evaluated for potential academic credit.
